Momentic

I’m one of the co-founders of a company that manufactures and distributes safety products.

We hired Momentic for website development and SEO services. The goal of our project was to increase our search engine rankings for branded and non-branded terms.

Momentic was responsible for conducting SEO-led website migration. The process included a discovery phase followed by a design and development phase. We collaborated on keyword research, and Momentic created backlinks and completed some structural work on the Shopify website.

We worked with two individuals from Momentic.

We spent around $15,000.

We worked together between January–March 2023.

We’ve seen a 932% increase in website traffic since working with Momentic. Our non-branded SEO traffic is also up 8,000%.

Be very clear on your scope.

The company created an app that reads data collected from a continuous glucose monitor and displays a glucose line graph in the app. Notifications are sent to the user if their glucose rises or drops below certain levels. The app also includes logs for sleep, water, food, and activity.

We had two points of contact and worked day-to-day with the co-founders, including the company president and the COO and director of SEO.

Momentic takes an immersive, hands-on approach. They use Asana as their main project management tool, utilize spreadsheets to track more granular progress of project deliverables, and create customized Google Data Studio dashboards to show proof that what they're doing is working.

Their warm, friendly style and how devoted they are to learning the business and being willing to pivot and advise when the numbers advise pivoting and testing. They work quickly and are willing to do tasks that can lie slightly outside of their scope to help smaller startups (such as dev tasks).

There was a slight hiccup when we were first getting started with Momentic and diving in to having them move forward with content planning, discovering writers that matched our style, and assigning articles to writers.

I’m the director of growth at a B2B marketing software startup.

I knew that our site was in bad shape after migrating from Wix to WordPress. I wanted to make sure that it was being indexed properly by Google.

Momentic helped us ensure that the pages outside of our home page were being properly indexed. From there, they helped us optimize our on-page SEO throughout our site. They helped us optimize our header tags, page titles, keywords, and copy.

I worked with Momentic at my previous company. At the time I interviewed 8–10 different SEO agencies. It didn’t feel like anyone had a truly differentiated approach in how they were looking at things. Our CMO reached out to a few mentors in his network. He suggested that we check out Momentic.

We spent $18,000–$20,000.

We started working together in August 2020, and we wrapped up in February 2021. We only stopped working together because we hired an in-house SEO resource. If we didn’t hire that person, we would’ve definitely continued to work with them.

In the six months that we worked together, we had a 78% increase in users. We also had a 79% increase in new users and a 70% increase in sessions.

We had a Slack channel, which was helpful. We also had an initial readout with them within the first 30–45 days where they presented a six-month roadmap. After that, we met monthly as a broader group. I also had a more tactical meeting every two weeks with Tyler.

They were always quick to provide recommendations in different areas. They were very good at initial recommendations, taking feedback, and mixing best practices with our business needs to help us reach our goals. They were very flexible and it was much appreciated.

It would’ve been great if they could’ve written copy for us. At the same time, we didn’t ask them to do that for us. Additionally, since we’re a two-person team we couldn’t act on all of the recommendations they offered. It would’ve been nice if they could start on some of those recommendations for us but that wasn’t outlined in their SOW.

My advice is to do as much customer research as you can. If you’re expecting them to come in and tell you which topics to focus on, you have to find the right balance between writing for people and writing for search engines.

I work for Fleet Farm, a medium-sized retailer in the Midwest. We sell everything from hunting and fishing products to pet and farm items to hardware, consumables, and automotive goods. Our saying is: “If Fleet Farm doesn’t have it, then you don’t need it.”

Initially, we brought them in to do a technical evaluation of our website. We don’t have a lot of internal resources; we’re brick-and-mortar-focused, so we don’t have a lot of e-commerce seats filled. We run on Oracle, but we don’t have a proper CMS, which raises issues code-wise. It’s hard to detect those issues sometimes because our builds are stacked on top of each other. Momentic came in to evaluate the search-friendliness of our site.

After the site evaluation, our largest project happened early on when we dealt with a schema markup issue on the site.

I regularly communicate with three people: Tyler (COO), Lauren (Digital Strategy Analyst), and Tory (Digital Strategy & SEO Analyst). Tyler is my main point of contact — I’d label him as my account manager. He does an awesome job and is good with communication. Lauren and Tory are both content-focused.

Their sister company is our primary paid search agency, and they introduced me to Momentic.

We’ve been working together since August 2018. There’s a monthly fee we pay. Our contract is set through 2021, and then we have to renew.

It’s hard to call out what’s improved, as we’re more focused on pivoting away from issues. Momentic is constantly monitoring and evaluating our performance, whether it’s rankings or site-speed. With site-speed, we made some additions to our code that apparently hurt our site speed, so I put in a ticket to fix it. Additionally, they noticed that we were making multiple HTTP calls when we didn’t need to. Our 3rd-party development team came up with a solution, but we wouldn’t have known to fix it without Momentic pointing it out.

We use Asana; they set it up so it works easily. At first, I wasn’t familiar with it, but they made modifications that organized it in a familiar manner. I have ongoing weekly calls with Tyler, and other relevant team members. Ongoing communication has been very helpful in developing where we want to go. There are open discussions.

I have close one-on-one communication with Tyler. In my work with larger media companies previously, I had to battle through a lot of layers before I got to the people who were working on my account. You lose something in those intervening layers, and I don’t have to deal with those at Momentic. I speak directly to Tyler, Lauren, and Tory.

I’m leaning on them for Google Analytics and Tag Manager services, and I wish they could do more with that. They’re not an analytics company, however, so maybe I shouldn’t expect more from them. I put those services on my wish list.

They’re great at understanding your needs and addressing them. I haven’t seen any shortcomings with them.

I’m the chief product officer of Saeidan. Ask Claire is our Medicare education and plan finder application for people who are looking to make better-informed decisions about their Medicare options.

Momentic helped us with Ask Claire and the organic side of marketing.

Momentic provided SEO services. First, they wanted to see how we were situated. Our site was built in Angular, which is a single-page application (SPA) JavaScript framework. The way that you implement Robots.txt, an XML sitemap, and metadata on a SPA is technically very different.

I worked most closely with Tyler (COO & Director of SEO) and Tony (CEO & President). Tyler was the more technical person, and I think he found the SPA aspect of the angular implementation to be a nice challenge. He looked into how the SPA actually affects SEO and how we should think through that build. It was really helpful to work with somebody who found this interesting and wanted to figure out how we could work within those parameters and constraints to make our SEO efforts as effective as possible.

We launched the early iteration of the tool in January 2020, and we worked with 2–3 other agencies who said they specialized in SEO. The information we were getting was reasonably consistent, but it wasn’t helpful — these agencies didn’t provide any context.

Our first conversation was in early December 2020, and we wrapped up this project in early February 2021. We plan to engage them again.

They explained their recommendations and set us up for success, so that as we roll out this next version, we’re starting off on the right foot. Their work will enable consumers to get to our product much easier.

Throughout the project, they provided periodic recommendations. We knew we’d be getting a debrief at the end of January, but these routine suggestions were unanticipated. We were very pleased that they took the time to let us know what they found so that we could address certain things sooner rather than later. They provided the context that we asked for.

Momentic's work was good, thorough, and fast. They're SEO specialists. It was a pleasure to work with Momentic, and I’m excited to continue working with them moving forward.

It would be really hard to fault them. The challenges that we ran into had to do with the SPA, which is the way that the web is evolving. I think that SEO companies in general should recognize that, while a good amount of the web is still built on platforms like WordPress, SPAs are becoming more relevant.

It was as easy as I could’ve imagined it being. Just have an open mind — SEO is a little bit of an art and a science. The reason you work with someone like Momentic is that you can’t know everything, so there will be times that they challenge some of your assumptions.
